Movie Monday

The Lady Vanishes
Dir. Alfred Hitchcock 1938

Wikipedia / IMDB

This is probably my favorite Hitchcock film. It is one of his lesser known films now, but it was a hit when it was released in 1938. It was one of his last films in the UK before coming over to Hollywood. The script is tight and the acting is excellent. It is somewhat suspenseful, but is also filled with wonderful British wit and charm.
It is an ensemble cast and each character has their own personality (most acting as social comedy on different aspects of the British persona.)

The premise is that a lady vanishes (note the title) while on a train. Lockwood's character is the only one who seems to recall seeing her. As is still the case today, most of the posters focused on the action of the film. However, the gunfight was only a minor point in the greater suspense of the film.

Hulu still has this up for viewing but I would recommend looking at your local library or Amazon to see if they have the Criterion Collection DVD for superior audio/video quality.
